Funeral Headstones and Flowers

Wednesday, September 12th, 2012

Funeral planning is not something that we want to consider or think about however it is a reality we all have to face at some time or another in the course of our lives. While the subject may not be one you are very familiar with or one that you even want to be familiar with it is nevertheless helpful to have a good understanding of the various factors that make up funeral services.

Grave markers or headstones can be made from a variety of different materials and you can see the craftsmanship around the San Diego Cemetery. Constructed or carved from the simpler and less durable wood, to granite, bronze, other rocks and other metals. This will depend on cost and how complex and detailed you wish to go. Generally speaking though, the most common materials used in a headstone would be concrete, granite or marble. The size of the selected monument will depend on personal preference. Many people would select the simpler design of a headstone with an inscription. Others will choose to go with something bigger, either as a mark of respect, or in an effort to make a final statement. In some cases, the larger headstones are used as a family marker, with the names and dates of multiple family members.

Usually, the larger and more elaborate the tombstone, the more important and wealthy the deceased was. If you walk through the Cemeteries, you will see a lot of bronze and granite monuments that remain standing, defying time. If you go in countries that are not so wealthy, you will find that the common man is simply marked by the rise of a wooden cross or other crude marker.

Silk flower arrangements will last much longer than live flowers for funerals so if you are looking for longevity artificial flower arrangements can be a good solution. You can ask the florist to design a bouquet for you or you can choose from one of the many bouquets. If you use an online florist it is very easy to choose funeral flowers. That’s because most times you can view their online catalogue and find the appropriate bouquet. Mums, gladiolas, and carnations are commonly used in funeral flower arrangements. They are beautiful and they are affordable so for those on a budget they are an option to consider. Of course there are many other flowers to choose from such as delphiniums, hydrangeas, and roses. There are cemetery flowers available for all budgets.

Casket flowers are traditionally sent by the immediate family directly to the funeral home. Because of the urgency you will have to choose flowers that the florist has available to them. You can still choose from a wide array of flowers. Most cemeteries are large and often they are understaffed so loved ones gravesites don’t always get the attention they should when it comes to maintenance and grooming. When you contract a florist to take care of these tasks you can relax knowing things are getting taken care in a timely manner, and that your loved ones gravesite is not being neglected.

Eulogy and Other Elements of a Funeral

Monday, September 3rd, 2012

California CemeteryChoosing the right cemetery is one of the most important parts of a burial plan. In many cases this is not an easy task. Cemeteries are not just plots of land. They are important parts of the grieving process. A cemetery should be a quiet place for contemplation and remembrance. Many people take out burial insurance along with their life insurance. This is to ensure that a good portion of the funeral costs are covered. How much your insurance will cover depends largely on the amount of policy you chose. Burial insurance will typically have no restrictions outside of the amount of the policy. Life insurance will only be payable under certain circumstances and cause of death. You need to review your insurance policy to determine how much is paid out and what, if any, stipulations are attached to the policy.

Every California Cemetery has funeral coordinators. If the service is at a church, you will want to speak with the person responsible for coordinating the funeral to go over details, such as arrival times, flower arrangements, audio and visual needs, reception arrangements, etc. If the service is at a funeral home, they will work with you to coordinate every detail. You’ll need to write the eulogy. A typical eulogy is about 5 minutes in length. It is recommended to leave the emotional elements for the end of the eulogy. Any additional tributes given by family or friends should be limited in length to keep the service from going too long. Young children and family members may want to write down a few sentences to be read aloud by the minister or the person giving the eulogy.

Whether or not you are giving the eulogy, it is helpful to have certain facts and information available. Outline of a Eulogy:

- Give a brief history including birth date, place of birth, parents, grandparents, siblings.
- Who did they marry? When and where? Children and grandchildren.
- How long were they married?
- Significant life accomplishments.
- Personal interests, hobbies, achievements.
- Character qualities, Christian service, and how they affected other lives.

Since everything we do after the death of a loved one is ultimately for the comfort of the living, it’s undeniable that there’s comfort in the tradition of interment. A headstone becomes symbolic of the person that has been lost. Whether immediately following the burial, months or even years afterwards, San Diego cemetery gravesites often serve as a place for the survivors to go to feel close to their deceased loved one, to offer a prayer or a thought, to meditate on life’s triumphs and joys, to remember the past, to continue to grieve or simply symbolically or spiritually commune with the departed.

A good funeral service will provide you the option for them to take care of everything with you doing nothing but leaving the budget number, guest contact information and family contact information. This way everyone can be invited, you stay within your budget and everything gets done while you spend the proper grieving time with your family. California Missions – History and Architecture

Wednesday, August 8th, 2012

California MissionsThere are 21 missions that are included in the California’s Historic Mission Trail are all located near Highway 101, which roughly traces El Camino Real known also as The Royal Road. It was named in honor of the Spanish monarchy, which financed the expeditions into California.

The first step of El Camino Real was forged by General Gaspar de Portola on his journey from San Diego to find Monterey Bay. Missionaries, colonists and soldiers traveled down this path. This road became known by the Missions Spanish Fathers established. It was the only road between few outposts. It served as the north-south stagecoach route after California became a state in 1850. During time these missions were largely reconstructed after the ravages of time, weather, earthquakes and neglect. Most of the missions are still active as Catholic parishes, with services that are regularly scheduled.

The eighteenth mission, San Luis Rey de Francia, called the King of California Missions, is maybe the most famous one. It was named after Louis IX, the crusading King of France. It is the most graceful of California’s missions because of its architectural style. It has been restored according to the original plans and designs. At its prime the Mission San Luis Rey’s structures and services compound covered almost 950,400 acres, along with its agricultural land grant property beyond. The mission gardens include a fruit orchard where California’s first pepper tree still grows. The church, which seats 1,000, is adjacent to a six-acre enclosed central square that includes a sunken garden, elaborate stone terrace and octagonal mortuary chapel. The oldest part of the church that still remains, the abode walls, dates from 1811.

It was also the most successful at converting Native Americans. They knew how to cultivate and harvest the flora, and use fauna for food and clothing, utilize stone, wood, clay, bone, hides, reeds and grasses, and seashells for making tools, garments, sophisticated baskets and pottery, weapons, ceremonial religious items, and in building shelters and community structures thanks to the experience they gained during their 8,000 years of residency.

The architecture style of the Missions is very recognizable and popular even today. Spanish Fathers had the knowledge of old esthetic design, while Natives were skillful people. Working together resulted in the architectural style that was not just practical, but also beautiful. Materials they used could be found in their surroundings, along the California coast: adobe, timber, stone, brick and tile, which are all the staples of the style today. They used a way originated in Spain and Mexico to produce mud bricks from earth and water, chaff, straw and manure, making even brick molds to produce more at once. The adobe from California was easy to make and handle and importantly light weighted, so the carrying was easy. Because so many people worked on the producing bricks, they started writing names and dates that can be seen even today, leaving a mark of that time. This way of building was very useful in this region of the US.

Purpose Of Spiritual Retreats

Monday, September 12th, 2011

Retreat is a time for renewal and regeneration of spirit, mind and body. You need to look closely and reflect on your thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and motivations. Periodically examining your experiences, the decisions you make, the relationships you have, and the things you engage in provide useful insights on your life goals, on the good traits you must sustain and the bad traits you have to discard.
We need to understand that there is energy of goodness within us, and that this increases or decreases according to our habits of thought and feeling. Knowing more about our selves, and how we function, gives us the power to think and act more positively. Periods of silence in which to reflect on our higher feelings, values, and purpose in life. We have to recharge own sense of well being, and learn how to maintain this strength in everyday life. Lectures, meditation, workshops, walks in the beautiful grounds, and a peaceful atmosphere all contribute to that process. Retreats are for ordinary people at any time in their lives. There are no expectations on anyone going on retreat and you don’t need to be a churchgoer.

Spiritual retreats can be a short stay of 24 hours on weekends and can be long enough to last for a few weeks and even months. Usually meditation retreats are located among cool, serene and natural surroundings, by the side of lakes, rivers or atop mountains. This is what an ideal retreat aims to be. Each retreat should offers exploration on a spiritual theme, with discussions, workshops, seminars and creative activities, such as art and drama. Meditation is an important. The retreat will explore how we can find inner strength at a time of relentless change and pressure, inspire and motivate each other to give our best and make a true contribution to the lives of those around us. The retreat should consist of a mixture of talks, informative dialogue and workshop activities, sharing of personal experiences as well as silent reflection and meditation commentary, interspersed with a variety of cultural inputs. (readings, live music).
